More and more bloggers and entertainment writers are embracing Instagram Live as a way to engage their readers and fans with a dynamic, interactive event.
If you are invited to join one of these live chats as a filmmaker, you should go for it! If you are prepared, it can be a great opportunity to find new fans and present your project in the best light.
Here are some tips to help you prepare.
- Read up on how to give a good interview first. Our previous post can help!
- You are your own best advocate. Speaking about your project with passion will help listeners share your enthusiasm and want to check out the movie. Go into the Instagram Live well rested, in a well-lit and quiet spot that is free of distractions, and be ready to shine.
- Bring notes. If you are worried you’ll forget the exact date or platforms your film will be released on, or think nerves will cause you to get your DP’s name wrong, write it down in advance! Don’t put any unneeded pressure on yourself. Plus, you definitely don’t want to get this kind of info wrong, so better to be safe than sorry.
- Show up early and give yourself time to iron out any connection issues. After 18+ months of Zoom meetings, this should be common knowledge by now, but the intimacy of Instagram Live can make you forget that this platform can have issues too, and you may need the extra time to sort it out.
- Speak slowly. It’s great to keep the energy up, but also remember that fans may be tuning in on the go or in a loud space.
- Don’t forget to mention all your social channels and website. Make it easy for these fans to find and follow you.
- Afterwards, follow up with a thank you post that tags everyone who participated in the interview or discussion. Stay in touch! Invite anyone who commented to follow your page so they stay engaged.
