AT&T and Samsung are holding a special event for the press on May 5 in New York City. The companies are not divulging any information about what will be announced. We know that it is some sort of product, but we are not sure of exactly what it will be. A new tablet? A new Android handset? Find out May 5 at 4 EST.

The companies aren’t saying what they’re launching, of course, and there’s always the outside chance it could be, say, the Galaxy S II — a new, flagship Samsung phone that recently launched in Europe. I had some hands-on time with the Galaxy S II at Mobile World Congress in February, and while it doesn’t push the envelope, it’s a handsome and well-built smartphone.

Let’s also remember that back on January 5, AT&T announced the Samsung Infuse 4G — an as-yet-unreleased, super-thin Android smartphone with a 1.2-Ghz Samsung Hummingbird processor and a gigantic 4.5-inch, 800-by-480 screen.

If the new smartphone is indeed the Infuse 4G, it’ll be interesting to see whether it launches with faux or “real” 4G. AT&T and T-Mobile have muddied the 4G waters recently by declaring HSPA+ 14.4 phones such as the Motorola Atrix to be “4G,” while T-Mobile’s chief network officer has said that nothing short of the faster HSPA+ 21 should be considered 4G.

Currently, AT&T has no HSPA+ 21 phones. T-Mobile has one, the Samsung Galaxy S 4G.

Several smartphones introduced at this year’s CES, back in January still haven’t appeared on shelves. We’re still waiting for AT&T’s Samsung Infuse 4G, but also Verizon’s Motorola Droid Bionic and LG Revolution.

We’ll be at AT&T’s event to check out the new device, of course.
