AT&T announces death of unlimited data plans; introduces metered data plans

AT&T announced the death of unlimited data plans beginning on June 7th. It’s not all bad news though, the company will be introducing a few less expensive metered data plans. There are two options for data phones and a new tethering option.

• DataPlus — 200 megabytes (MB) of data for $15 per month. AT&T claims that 65% of AT&T smartphone customers use less than 200 MB of data per month.
• DataPro — 2 gigabytes (GB) of data for $25 per month. If customers go over the 2 GB cap, they will get an additional 1 GB of data for $10. AT&T claims that 98% of AT&T customers use less than 2 GB of data per month.
• Tethering — Smartphone customers who have the DataPro plan can add tethering for $10 a month. The good news is that this includes the iPhone when OS4 is released this Summer
• iPad — A new $25 per month 2 GB data plan will replace the current $29.99 unlimited plan.
