Rogers, a Canadian carrier, announced today that it will be launching its LTE 4G network in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, and Ottawa in 2011. Additionally, it will launch in the top 25 markets across Canada in 2012. Rogers customers can expect speeds that are three or four times faster than its HSPA+ network with peak download speeds of up to 150 Mbps and peak upload speeds of 70 Mbps. The LTE network will first launch using the AWS spectrum and will eventually deploy in multiple bands once it runs smoothly.

Rogers has been doing trial tests for its LTE network in Ottawa and Montreal over the past year to ensure a smooth launch in 2011. - ROGERS LAUNCHES LTE NETWORK THIS YEAR

Gold Standard Wireless Technology Will Revolutionize the Mobile Experience for Canadians

TORONTO, April 27 /CNW/ — Rogers Communications Inc. announced today that it will launch its Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in 2011. Rogers will launch commercial LTE network services in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa in 2011 with the top 25 markets across Canadacoming online in 2012.

“The world is moving to LTE and we’re thrilled to be leading the way by bringing this next generation technology to our consumer and business customers,” said Nadir Mohamed, President and CEO of Rogers Communications Inc. “We’re investing substantially to drive Canada’s digital economy and we’re excited to bring this platform for innovation to Canadians.”

LTE is a next generation technology that will enable unparalleled connectivity, giving customers a mobile broadband experience similar to what they currently experience at home and at work.

Rogers customers will experience speeds that are between three and four times faster than HSPA+ with peak download rates of up to 150 Megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds of up to 70 Mbps.

LTE will deliver lower latency than HSPA+ which means a better experience for customers using highly interactive applications like multi-player gaming and rich multi-media communications. It will deliver more usage capacity which means more users can access the network at top speeds without affecting overall network performance.

Rogers will initially launch LTE using AWS spectrum and will over time deploy LTE in multiple bands to ensure the best possible experience for customers. Rogers has selected Ericsson, the world’s leading provider of technology and services to telecom operators, as its supplier in commercial deployment.

“LTE is the critical foundation to deliver a world increasingly being defined by connected experiences,” added Mohamed. “With LTE, our customers can use their smartphones, tablets and laptops in ways they never before thought possible — LTE is the fuel that will power Canadian innovation for years to come.”

Rogers announced a comprehensive technical trial of LTE in Ottawa and Montreal last year to ready itself for a smooth, commercial deployment in 2011. Rogers customers can enter to win a ‘Future of Fast’ package including a trip to Toronto, passes for this year’s Honda Toronto Indy along with a one of a kind unique racing experience.
