Bonding with Your Kids and Smartphone Movie Making
Most filmmakers use software to write screenplays, but when you’re ten years old a pencil is the smartest tool.
Many professional filmmakers are making films using smartphone cameras and during episode 147 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking, you’re going to hear Sophia McDonald and her Dad Ryan McDonald share their mobile filmmaking experience. Sophia is ten years old and her co-star sister is seven.

The story was based on a true story and it’s a lighthearted fun movie that has already won an award.
Ryan McDonald is an independent filmmaker and actor. He’s made many films, including a feature film, Married and Loving It shot with an iPhone. The film was a participant in the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego in 2020.
Ryan and Brandy McDonald presented a mobile filmmaking workshop during IMFF 2022 in San Diego. You can listen to their last appearance in our podcast in episode 131.
Ryan said that when he asked Sophia what she wanted for Christmas last year, to his delight, she asked for a filmmaking kit. She’s been on several film sets with him, when appropriate. Sophia has been inspired by the experience.
They both set out to make Sophia’s short film during one weekend, with her younger sister Alyssa.
Ryan and Sophia shared some of the technical aspects they used to make the film. They shared some tips and tricks they used to accomplish some effects during filming.
I challenged Sophia to make a new film for the 2024 edition of the International Mobile Film Festival and am really looking forward to seeing it and meeting her in San Diego.
