Last couple weeks have been exciting for iPhone filmmakers. After the announcement of the iPhone 15 and the release of Black Magic Design’s camera app you probably heard the news Sunday night of a breakthrough for the WGA Strikes. Stories abound and filmmaking is on the forefront.

I had the pleasure and the privilege of discussing mobile filmmaking, Artificial Intelligence, and the new Blackmagic Camera app for mobile filmmaking, with our friend, Arthur Mikheev, of Pocket Film School.

Arthur Mikheev.

You can listen to our conversation in episode 159 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking. Listen online or download to listen anytime, anywhere.

Arthur began his career working in television and made films using DSLR cameras before he turned to the iPhone. Soon, he started his film school and began writing books, creating content and making films — all with his iPhones.

His short film, War is Not A Game won First Prize in the 2021 edition of the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego, California. Arthur was in our podcast, episode 101 in January 2021. You may want to listen to that episode where he shares more about his personal life in Moscow.

War is Not A Game premieres September 26, 2023 on mobilefilmstories.com

When you watch the short film he made in March 2020, that was submitted to the IMFF in San Diego, you notice the quality of the cinematography. Beautiful picture with smooth shots, cinematic color grading and a profound story with an emotional message. All in under two minutes.

You can watch War is Not A Game now on Mobile Film Stories and experience for yourself, why he won First Place in April 2021.

The film was shot in Russia with an iPhone 11 Pro, in 2020. In my opinion, the film is a bit prophetic.

During this episode, Arthur shares his experience color grading and then we discuss some technical features making movies and videos using smartphone cameras and some of the pros and cons of the most popular camera apps.

We discussed Artificial Intelligence, camera apps, filmmaking advice, inspirational stories, and more. Most importantly, Arthur gives some inspiring advice to filmmakers of all ages. One of them is to believe in yourself. If he didn’t believe you could make films, he would not have spent the last five or so years teaching the elements of filmmaking, with smartphone cameras to his students.

The SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking is available in podcasting apps like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart, Amazon Music, Pandora, and more.

We look forward to bringing Arthur back for more reviews, tips and filmmaking advice with smartphones.
