Sound engineer and smartphone filmmaker Brionne Olsen is inspired by storytelling to make films in South Africa.

I met Brionne in 2020–21 on Twitter when he shared a travel vlog he shot with his iPhone. I don’t recall if it was his first vlog, but I remembered his excitement over using the camera on his iPhone. And of course, that caught my attention. After finding out more about Brionne Olsen, I came to realize he made a film called Finding Freedom, which I could appreciate the artistic and cinematic nature of the film with poetic narrative, and high quality audio.

I asked Brionne to come on and share his storytelling and mobile filmmaking story with listeners on the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking and he accepted my invitation.

Since then, Brionne has been a great colleague in our community and I’ve had much respect for his talent and skills. As an indie film and video creator, I appreciate his persistence in high quality filmmaking. So it was no surprise earlier this year, when he shared a new film which blew my mind.

Elements of Movement is a mesmerizing beautiful short film Brionne created with some very basic gear and a tremendous amount of talent and skill. It’s truly inspiring to witness the story of someone who has transitioned as a beginning smartphone videographer and filmmaker to a high level of accomplishment. Therefore, I asked Brionne to come back to share his progress and his techniques to our listeners in my podcast.

When you watch Elements of Movement, you’ll notice the talented dancers, the interaction between light and shadow and how the camera connects with the empowering movement of the female dancers. The ambient sound was captured on the iPhone and later mixed in DaVinci Resolve, which is where Brionne edited the piece.
