Music in Film Tells the Story
Jason Rivera scores music for films. As a composer based in Los Angeles, he scores music for films and media companies.
Jason shares his perspective on storytelling, music for film, and why it’s important for directors and composers to collaborate in the process of making films, even before the film is in production.

A film element Jason discusses is color. We discussed how color plays into film as part of the story, but I had not heard of a composer’s perspective before. I was intrigued by Jason’s passion for music in the films he works on. He believes music is part of the storytelling process and it’s why he emphasizes the benefits of working close with a film director.
The entire audio experience in any movie is tremendously vital to the effect a film, or a video, has on its viewer.
We spoke about the movie, “JAWS.” We used it as an example of storytelling with music. Watching the film without sound during the shark’s scenes terrorizing its victims only works with sound.
Music as a sound effect is part of the scoring process. Visual effects without sound and music miss making an impact.
I met Jason Rivera in San Diego at the International Mobile Film Festival in April 2023. Jason composed the music for one of the official short films screening at the festival by Conor Geary from Indiana. The film, Help Wanted, received a great response during the festival screening.
Jason enjoyed the experience of attending the festival to the point that he is still talking about it with his friends.
Born in New Jersey to a Puerto Rican musically talented family, he was inspired by his father’s and grandfather’s performances as guitarists in a Salsa band. His dad played bass.
By the time Jason was 4 years-old, he was writing and playing music starting with a toy Fisher Price recorders. Jason spent much of his youth surrounded by instruments around his home, and a family of musicians. Jason learned to play guitar and drums at home, and he was influenced by his dad’s music collection which included John Williams and of course, Salsa music.
