You’re a filmmaker no matter what device you use to make films. And if you’re using the camera on your smartphone to make films, you’re in luck.

The Smart Z-Finder by Zacuto has your back.

The Smart Z-Finder was designed by Zacuto founders and Product Designers, producer and director Steve Weiss and cinematographer Jens Bogehegn. Steve and Jens have been making films and winning awards together for many years. Another thing they’ve done together, created their company in Chicago, Illinois. Zacuto designs products that have become a standard in the film and video industry.

Steve and Jens bring their 80 years of combined experience as award winning filmmakers to create products based on four central principles: balance, ergonomics, comfort for all day shooting, and products that are universal ‘to work with all cameras’. Zacuto.com

I had the honor to sit down with Steve Weiss last week, to discuss film and video and the Smart Z-Finder for mobile filmmakers and smartphone creators for the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking: The voice of mobile film™.

SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking is in all major podcast apps like Apple Podcasts for IOS and Spotify for Android. Listen to Episode 163.

Steve is passionate about filmmaking and has the professional experience you’d expect from someone who’s won many awards and works closely with the industry.

It was this passion for telling stories through film that brought him and Jens together on a project, and Steve has only worked with Jens as a cinematographer since.

Steve and Jens began to design gear that did not exist to make their production better. That turned into a partnership renting their filmmaking rigs. However, their clients wanted to buy their rigs and so, they decided to design their gear for sale.

During the recording on the podcast, Steve offered to send me the Smart Z-Finder, and within days it was in my hands.

I’ll save my experience for now. But I’ll just say that it gave me a boost as a smartphone videographer. I had a “born again” type of experience due to my 20 or so years as a video producer working in the industry.

Steve shares stories that are powerful and valuable for amateurs and those who want to learn from industry insiders. With many years experience, talking to Steve was inspiring. I‘m honored and excited to share our in-depth conversation with you.
