“Cinematography comes from photography, comes from, you know, fine arts and painting and compositions…all those disciplines are really old, but the one true language of filmmaking is editing.” Dhwani Shah.

Episode 192 of the SBP Podcast Mobile Filmmaking is an introspective and inspiring discussion about what Dhwani Shah refers to as the language of film.

The language of filmmaking was a theme throughout our conversation, which shined a light to a unique insight in storytelling through film.

Dhwani Shah is a writer, director and editor. She believes editing is the true language of filmmaking, and enjoys narrative filmmaking the most. She raises the awareness of how everything in the filmmaking process evolves from a previous technique. She said cinematography comes from photography and photography comes from art with composition. She pointed out how editing is unique to film.

Dhwani has always been attracted to psychology which brings an awareness and perspective in her style of filmmaking.

I was captivated by her words when she shared the importance of audio quality in films which, she says, is even more important with a film shot on a smartphone.

To overcome the notion that using a smartphone camera is not a viable option for filmmaking, it’s detrimental to have outstanding good audio to really impress the naysayers.

This episode of the podcast is filled with many tips and information about the filmmaking process from an experienced professional filmmaker who is well-versed in her understanding of what a director is and how a director evolves into a respected filmmaker in the industry.

“The worst thing you can do in directing an actor is to tell them how to act.” Dhwani Shah.

Her short film, “Sapling” won the first prize at the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego last April. Attending with Dhwani was Mila Besson, Ellen Prudente and Lydia Muir.

When I first watched her film, I was genuinely impressed with not only the aesthetics of the film, but the acting, the audio, the story and dialogue between the two protagonists. The performance between them was captured in an intimate and yet non-intrusive manner. Something that I feel is one of the benefits of filming with smartphone cameras.

Dhwani Shah with her award at IMFF last April and production shots on set of “Sapling.”

Synopsis: A young writer’s creative session takes an abrupt turn when her mentor initiates an uncomfortably edgy game of ‘Truth Or Dare’, unraveling the intricate web of consent and power politics.

“Sapling” was shot with an Apple iPhone 14 Pro in New York City. The film was written, directed and edited by Dhwani Shah.

Producer & 1st AD was Lydia Muir. Director of Photography was Nora Althani.
