Note: may contain some spoilers.
1. The nostalgic references bring us back in time.
Since Stranger Things is set in the 1980s, it is especially nostalgic for those who grew up watching movies such as The Goonies, ET, and Stand By Me. Nostalgia is a driving force in the show and part of its charm is due to the outfits, the lingo, and the music.
The Duffer Brothers easily draw us in with their influences from vintage classics. The Stephen King and Stephen Spielberg references make us travel back to a time where cassette tapes and pay phones still existed.
2. The cast members deliver an incredible performance.
Winona Ryder is an award-winning actress that is known for her previous roles in Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Little Women. She has made a great comeback as Joyce Byers, whose performance has been nothing but captivating.
In an interview with Radio Times, Ross Duffer mentioned that “the script was re-written so that the character was based on Winona herself, to a degree.”
Finn Wolfhard and Gaten Matarazzo were a few of the notable actors on screen. British actress, Millie Bobby Brown, plays her phenomenal role as Eleven, the most identifiable character on the show. Eleven is not your typical girl — she’s a freak, an outcast, an enigma with a shaved head. Her obsession with waffles keeps us hungry for her ever-evolving presence in the series.
3. The relatable characters remind us of our childhood.
Stranger Things is centered around a group of nerdy middle schoolers who don’t fit in with their fellow schoolmates. The show is able to generate a heartwarming atmosphere as we live vicariously through a closed world of growing friendships.
With an exploration for teenage romance and a time where sci-fi fans could get you thrown into a locker, the thrilling series invites us back to a time of innocence. Most of us have felt like an outsider at some point in our lives and the characters in Stranger Things make us feel less alone.
4. The series has a good mix of both horror and humour.
With the combination of interdimensional monsters and a group of characters that keep you grinning with every episode, Netflix does a good job of keeping a happy balance between horror and humour in this smash hit series.
The horror sequences and hilarious moments between these lovable characters are part of the show’s uniqueness. Stranger Things lives up to its name in every aspect and has a well-written plot with elements of various genres. The multiple story arcs keep us engaged with its terrifying elements and chilling narratives.
5. The suspense keeps us on our toes and wanting more.
Stranger Things does a remarkable job of continuously creating twists that make the series both exciting and binge-worthy. Since the seasons are short and sweet, it’s very easy to digest episode after episode.
The spooky drama leaves us with plenty of questions involving top-secret government experiments and an extraordinary girl with superpower abilities.
As we impatiently wait for the next storyline to be revealed, we know that the cliffhangers easily lock us to our screens. What strange things will be happening next in the show? I guess we’ll find out soon.
Nothing says “strange” like a mall…
“Hawkins is about to get turned upside down in Season 3 by the strangest thing they’ve ever encountered.”
Mark your calendars for its return on July 4, 2019.
