The Practicality of Social Networks in Career Options

Social media has become ingrained in many people’s lives. We spend so much time on social media, not recognizing the implications or the effects of this in our lives. Being a generation incredibly reliant on technology, many things have become more accessible. Some of these things, like communication, news and information as a whole are present with just a click. Because of this, social media has become like second nature to most–feeling connected towards the world created by the internet. This may seem like an impractical waste of time to many, especially the older generation who are not as familiar with the ins and outs of social media. But to those on the other end, social media has become a part of their lifestyle.

As time pass, the generation also changes. The structure of everything changes as well, and one of the biggest changes can be the medium of how news gets passed around. Social media has definitely made information dissemination a lot quicker. Some would say this is more efficient- but one would think otherwise. Social media has paved the way for a new kind of information dissemination. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube are just some of a the few social media platforms that have changed the game. In the past, news or gossip would have to go through landline calls, now it can be done with a click. Instant messaging applications like Viber, WhatsApp, and Line are also big instigators that change the information dissemination game. Because we live in a fast-paced world that is constantly changing, the structure of professions and how things are done also changes.

Students are those who are mostly affected by the new influx of social media. They are on social media almost 24/7, whether it to be to tweet about their day or watch a classmate’s Instagram story. Because of all the time they spend on social media, students might consider a job that needs 24/7 social media attention.

A profession affected by this would be the job of a press officer. A press officer is the main media contact of a firm. They coordinate and communicate with the press, as to what has to be released with relations to the firm. A press officer’s work heavily surrounds public relations. With many social media platforms available, the work of a press officer may be more appealing towards a bigger crowd.

To become a press officer, one must take any course in relation to public relations, graduating with an undergraduate degree. It is also important to be proficient in English and the main language of one’s country of work. Journalism and media studies are also important. The main job of a press officer is to address certain stories in a sensitive enough way for the audience to take it.

To further understand, press officers have to deal with instances like accidents or mishaps a company could come across. For example, a car crashes through the parking facility of a mall, and the structure was not able to hold. The structure thus breaks, and causes a scene. Looking at it from both sides, both the driver and the firm who owns the parking facility may be in fault. But, a firm needs to protect its name- needing a press officer to properly release a proper statement regarding the incident- doing so however they see it fit. If the firm needs to apologize, pay for better structure, or take no blame- it is up to the firm and press officer.

If one is interested in a job in public relations but is not interested in becoming a press officer, there are other routes they can take as well. Some jobs range from lobbyists, advertising account managers, public relations officer, an arts agent/promoter and more. All these jobs are related to public relations, but no job is like a press officer’s. Press officers are the hidden gems of the public relations sector- controlling what the public sees about a firm. Being a press officer gives one the power to convey a firm in a certain way- depending on the situation.
