The Best Technology Innovations in Sport, Our Pick: Hockey
This week we turn to the NHL, ice hockey, and look at how they have used technology to improve the sport.
The four teams of the NHL played in their first game in 1917 and since then hockey has grown very popular in both Canada and the USA.
Sport: Goal-Line Technology. Innovation: Goal-Line Technology. Year Introduced: 1993.
Hockey was the first sport to implement Goal-Line Technology, beating soccer and introducing it in 1993. Today soccer’s implementation is arguably better but hockey was the first to install an overhead camera.
The overhead camera allows visibility of the goal line and a video goal judge is at each NHL game. The technology allows them to monitor all plays and overrule the referee if there is video evidence the official was in error.
Referees can also consult the video evidence to decide whether the puck crossed the line. This reduces errors and well, makes the game fairer.
