Living longer should be a resoundingly good thing, but many people fear it. Why? …

Today, living longer is great up to a point, but has two minor inconveniences: decay and death …

When these inconveniences loom for each of us personally, we may get depressed, giving in to the slow suicide of …

  • Addiction and indulgence.
  • Physical and mental inactivity.
  • Withdrawal.

It’s hard to over-estimate the negative potential of age-related decline, which spoils too many of our new-found years.

But there’s really good news.

Enhanced-longevity science shows that, in escalating levels of power …

  1. Smiling alone can help, especially when we make others smile too.
  2. Lifestyle changes can give us even more reason to smile.
  3. Science-based weapons against aging are proliferating.
  4. Mind-body practices (offering peace and transformation) are proliferating too.

We don’t have to give in to decay and death without a fight.

We can shrink the years of physical or mental disability and extend our “healthspans,” the years of our lifespans that are fit, happy, and productive.

A greater percentage our time can be quality time, regardless of how long we live.

In the pre-industrial world, average life expectancy at birth was about 30. Now it’s approaching 70; and within the lifetimes of today’s toddlers, it could approach 80, 90, or 100.

Today’s newborns have up to 40 “extra years” to spend, a quantum leap from pre-industrial times; and in post-industrial times, now dawning, the newborns’ extra years could jump to 50, 60, or 70.

Spending the bulk of those years well — fit, happy, and productive — is the opportunity of our lifetime.

What specific, practical steps can we take?

Our options fall into the four categories introduced above. You might prefer one or a combination of these keys to success:

(1) Just smile, and pass your smiles along.

Smiling alone makes a difference. (Really! See the science.) And a positive attitude, with or without smiling, helps too.

Accept the worst and make the most of the time you’ve got. Frowning only adds to the angst. And when you make others smile too, it can start a chain reaction that never ends.

The Smile Longer program offers a daily stream of positive posts, some sure to coax a smile and lighten your days and those of all you touch.

(2) Apply today’s life-enhancing options

From wellness practices to tech tools and risk management, resources abound. Take advantage of them to actually lengthen your “healthspan” — your years of fitness and productivity.

Postpone the worst while making the best of things. You may not be able to evade decay and death, but you can put them off.

In the daily stream of Smile Longer posts, read the mounting scientific evidence. Keep up on what’s new, or remind yourself of what you already know. You probably know, for example, that dementia can be delayed by exercise and diet, and that healthy lifestyles keep mind and body going longer. The latest reports or amusing examples can freshen your focus and strengthen your habits.

(3) Expect health and longevity breakthroughs

Science is taking us to a time when we may do more than slow down aging. We may shift it into reverse. Healthspans promise to grow even longer and morph into “super-healthspans” of increasing vitality.

The fountain of youth has eluded us for centuries. But today it’s no longer a dreamer’s delusion. New developments brings us tantalizingly closer every month. There’s no reason, some researchers say, we can’t eventually change our biology to live much longer in good shape. Bowhead whales make it past 200. Why can’t we?

Might we start getting “younger” in all ways — appearance, resistance to disease, vigor, memory, creativity? Might we start exceeding our actual younger selves with brand-new capabilities: bio-enhancements, embedded links to artificial intelligence, and more?

In the stream of Smile Longer posts, you can follow the research on life-extension, transhumanism, cognitive enhancement, and more. It’s sure to make you smile — if not for yourself, for your children or grandchildren.

(4) Transcend physical reality

Go beyond everyday reality into the realm of mind or spirit. Death is almost sure to come sometime, even if we make ourselves “biologically immortal” like jellyfish. But there’s a fix for this.

It’s the same fix that’s worked for wise and devout people through all history: transcendence. This fix requires faith that may be unscientific, but billions swear by it through religion or philosophy. So do a few maverick scientists.

Put decay and death at bay as best we can through force of will and feeling. Regardless of how old or fit we are, exceed our present limits in physical action, skill, connection, emotion, and contribution. Proceed with purpose and passion. And live each day as if we’ll live forever — because (in this perhaps illusory reality!) life trumps matter and we’re all in this together.

In the daily stream, read the views and success stories of famous people and fellow participants. You’ll even find a bit of provocative science. Enjoy the cornucopia of ideas and perspectives, which may seem crazy but perhaps delight and inspire you with their scope, variety and potential.

Much better times may lie ahead …

… if we just buck up, take advantage of known practices, open ourselves to the new, and assert our inner thirst for life and connection.

But don’t forget your usual caution. While striving for the best possible outcomes, we need to prepare for the worst. Decline and death lurk for us all. We are wise to plan for their possibility while reducing their probability. Remain savvy about insurance and other contingency measures.

Optimism in balance with skepticism

Remember that everything from auto insurance and health checkups make sense in spite of the safest driving or best diets; and that precaution can can ease our stress so we drive even more safely or eat even more sensibly!

A rare path to prosperity for the economy, society, and maybe you!

For suppliers of longevity-related products and services, a multi-trillion-dollar marketing opportunity beckons! And that’s just for starters.

For everyone, it’s a chance to extend our vital years; infuse more senior wisdom and wealth into the economy; and usher in a sustainable long-term supersociety.
