Let’s talk about happiness

Happiness is what most people live for. It’s the greatest gift we have.

It’s what every parent wants for their child, every husband wants for their wife, every friend wants for their friend.

What makes us happy?

Our happiness level is dictated by 3 factors:

  • Our past experiences and learned behaviours
  • Our environment
  • The intentional actions we make

Once we have our basic human needs met, such as food and shelter, there is almost no correlation between happiness and wealth.


How do our past experiences determine our happiness?

Everything that has happened to us in the past determines how we see the world. Every view point we have is determined by what we have decided about our past experiences.

Say the first time you talk to a girl as a kid, if that girl shuts you down, you may make that mean that you aren’t good enough. You go through the rest of your life, thinking you aren’t good enough until you realise what is happening.

We can train ourselves to work through our past experiences so they do not impact our future.


How does our environment impact our happiness?

When you get on a crowded tube. When you are walking alongside a busy road. When you watch a terror attack on the news. These things all impact your happiness.

When your friend rings you to see how you are. When a stranger smiles at you. When your boss tells you that you are doing a good job. These things all impact your happiness.

We can train ourselves to deal with our environment so that we are able to deal powerfully with the things that happen to us.


How do intentional actions impact our happiness?

There are a number of intentional actions that are proven to make us happier:

  • doing different things / doing things differently
  • personal development
  • physical activity
  • flow — being in the moment with an activity (cooking, coding, tennis etc)
  • close / supportive family and friends
  • supporting others
  • counting blessings (appreciation)
  • acts of kindness
  • play

We can build these activities into our daily routines to have a dramatic effect on our happiness.
