Bala Bala — An Indonesian Snack
Easy recipe, 30 minutes to cook
Bala bala, also called Bakwan, is the Indonesian name for vegetable pancakes. It’s main ingredient is flour, water and carrots. You can add a lot of other vegetables. For this recipe I’ll go with the typical Indonesian recipe as it’s done in West Java.
Ingredients
For 4 people, you need:
- 400 grams of Wheat Flour
- 3 small spoons of Thai Spices (e.g. “Rosdee” Food Seasoning with Chicken Flavor) — you can also use chicken broth or vegetable broth
- 3 Carrots
- 1/4th White Cabbage
- 1 long green onion
- 300ml of water
- Salt
- Pepper
- Oil for frying (at least 100ml)
Optionally:
- 140g corn
- Chili for creating a sauce to dip. Alternatively, I use a sweet and source sauce when I’m lazy
- Rice as a side dish
Tools
- 1 Big bowl
- 1 Sharp knife and cutting board
- 1 Peeler for the carrots
- 1 Grater
- 1 frying pan
- 1 spatula
Preparation
Peel the carrots and use the Grater to make small pieces. Cut the green onion into small pieces. Cut the cabbage into small pieces.
Put the wheat and the spices in the bowl and mix it. Add the carrots, the cabbage and the onions and mix again. Add the water, salt and pepper. Mix until you get a homogeneous dough. Add more water, if you can’t mix the stuff. Add more wheat if it is not sticking together.
Put the oil in the pan. The oil should be at least 5mm high. Heat the oil until it is hot.
Put the dough in it. Fry to the degree you like.
Selamat menikmati 🤤
