Nowadays, it seems like it is necessary for everyone to have some sort of social media presence. Everyone, from the technologically savvy, to my grandfather who still does not know the difference between a private Facebook message and a public reply, sees value in sharing and checking in with one another through the countless available social media platforms.

So, with all of these amazing platforms a click away, why should you consider sharing with a simple newsletter? Here are a few reasons to try a more creative avenue of sharing with your network.

Newsletters can be aesthetically pleasing

Social media posts are meant to just give you snippets of information. Some may allow you to share an image with the post, but for the most part, they are only text.

I am not sure about you, but if I am scrolling through my Facebook feed, I tend to give up on posts that exceed eight sentences. The sea of text does not hold my attention when there are so many other images, announcements, and news articles competing for my “Like” or click. A beautiful newsletter has a much better chance of earning a second look.

Send to the right people

I know that the goal of social media is to reach as many people as possible, to reach the ends of the Earth and speak to people who live thousands of miles away. However, on social media, not everyone is necessarily interested in what you are putting out there.

With a newsletter, you can customize your mailing list to include people who will actually appreciate your message and support what you have to say. As you gain more of a following, you can add their names to your contact list.

Engage your audience in a different way

Social media posts tend to have a specific format depending on what platform you are using. They can be limited in how many links, images, and videos you can add to a post because your potential audience is supposed to just take a quick look at your post from their feed, and then move on. They can spend more time looking at the post later if something about it looked appealing.

With a newsletter, you can engage your audience more by adding all kinds of media in a clean, organized, and uncluttered space.

For example, you can embed Youtube videos on to your newsletter that interest you, or made yourself. If you have a business, you can embed a map with the location of your store/office and add links to your website as well as contact information. You can add images, add text, and even embed a poll from Google forms to a newsletter.

Of course you can always see the upside of sharing your message on social media. You can reach many different people in no time. On the other hand, what do you have to lose by sending out a newsletter? You will definitely stand out for sending out your message in a refreshingly creative way.
