Between Oct 2020 and Jan 2021, Talent and Growth Department (TNG) decided to experiment and brought forth very different initiatives with respect to what it had been offering so far. We were very happy to see the optimistic response from our Senior Data Associates (SDAs) and are thankful for the support we garnered. We look forward to your continued support and participation in our future initiatives :)

Keeping up with the spirit to experiment, ‘Let’s Learn’ section of this time brings a surprise as well. Find out as you read through this article!

Highlights from Oct 2020 to Jan 2021

HackerRank Challenge (Run 1)

  • TNG Team conducted its very first HackerRank Challenge from 5 to 11 Oct 2020.
  • It covered wide ranging topics like linked lists, dynamic programming and stacks, just to name a few.
  • Well done to our winners: Beh Wei Chen (1st), Steven Chia (2nd), and An Nguyen(3rd)

In case you missed the challenge, you can still have a look at the questions here!

SDA Project Continuation

  • Throughout December 2020, some of our internal core team DAs (2020–21 Term 1 Batch) decided to continue improving their DAP projects.
  • The continued projects include interesting topics like detecting sarcasm, stock prediction and predicting the number of claps for Medium articles.
  • One team also decided to embark on a new project which is aimed towards building BIA’s very own chatbot. We can’t wait to use it!

Git repositories and deployed apps will be soon available on the project page here. So, do keep a look out for them!

Deployment Workshop

  • TNG Team conducted a pilot run of our deployment workshop on 26 Dec 2020 with recently graduated internal core team DAs. The objective was to help them learn techniques that they can use to deploy their DAP projects.
  • From understanding what’s a virtual environment to trying out a Flask application to using AWS’s Lambda and Elastic Beanstalk — the DAs learnt it all!

We are thankful to those who attended this workshop and would like to appreciate their constructive feedback which will guide us for similar workshops in future

Pandasmonium (Run 1)

  • TNG held one-of-a-kind, fun quiz to let SDAs showcase their ability in Pandas.
  • The event was held on Fri, 22 Jan 2021.
  • The quiz was in pairs and was well-suited for people with little to intermediate experience with pandas.
  • Congratulations to the winning teams: Cindy Zheng Xinxin & Phan Van Lam (1st), and Yeo Bao Shin & Jiaying Ma (2nd)

A big shoutout to those who attended the event as audience and boosted the participants’ morales!

What’s coming!

HackerRank Challenge (Run 2)

  • Looking at the response to Run 1 of the HackerRank Challenge, TNG Team will be back with another one later in this semester.

Keep a look-out for an EDM as well as on ‘Our BIA Fambam’ telegram group for confirmation on the date and other details

Let’s learn!

No more reading in this edition! Rather, we would like you to have some fun with a data science puzzle that we’ve come up with. It tests what you learnt in DAP. So, it would be a good refresher as well.
