Dunning Kruger Effect in Career Decisions | Pallavee Purie
How much information is enough? Do I know enough? What am I missing out on? Are you fully prepared? These questions can be troubling. They can lead to us being too serious or not serious at all. They can make us analyse too much or not analysing at all. Let me ask you some more questions. Do you have the right information? Do you know which is the relevant information for you? Do you know the correct sources of information? The Dunning-Kruger effect, is a cognitive bias whereby people with low ability at a task overestimate their ability. Some researchers also include in their definition the opposite effect for high performers: their tendency to underestimate their skills. The Dunning–Kruger effect is usually measured by comparing self-assessment with objective performance.
Let’s try and understand how this effect can impact your career decisions.
This episode contains a recording of an Instagram Live that I did with Pallavee Purie, a counselling psychologist, has worked in the field of education and mental health for more than 12 years now. She has closely worked with young adults, teachers and parents throughout her professional life to induce an in- depth understanding of the causal relationship between self regulation and mental hygiene. As the societal pressures increase in our already over- competitive world, Pallavee has assisted people of diverse age groups to acknowledge their own journey with better emotional, social and financial adjustments in place. As a digital nomad, she has also gained more interesting insights into the practical implications of the tools of psychotherapy in different social set ups.
Pallavee Purie and Saurabh Nanda discuss how knowledge, its quality and quantity and sources can impact our career decisions. Some of the topics they touch in the podcast are:
- What is the Dunning Kruger effect?
- Why are certain decisions easier than others?
- How much information is enough?
- How to avoid falling for this trap?
- Listener Questions
This episode is the fourth in the series “The Psychology of Careers” where Saurabh Nanda discusses the psychology behind our career related behaviour as manifested in our choices, our decisions, our thinking and our evaluation criteria in our professional and by association, our personal lives.
