Therapy Through Dance

What is therapy through dance? It’s dance and emotional wellbeing coming together to mentally bring peace and happiness to one’s mind. This is known as dance therapy. It is defined as the psychotherapeutic use of movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual, for the purpose of improving health and well-being. Dance keeps the body fit and functioning and when one combines it with therapy it helps in the release of happy hormones such as serotonin and dopamine.

With the pandemic going on many people are already stressed, and anxiety and depression among the population has become common. During these hard times, dance therapy is something that can provide everyone with emotional support and strength which is much needed. It provides a break from all the negativity and despair.

Covid-19 is spreading fear, worry and concern among the population. This pandemic isn’t affecting us only physically; it has many mental health repercussions too. Many people are developing covid fear and covid anxiety leading to sleeplessness, weakness, fatigue, depression and nightmares. Kids are having a hard time with online classes and exams, and adults with online offices and increasing workload. Many people are losing their jobs and many are losing their closed ones. Therapy can provide everyone with a place to process their emotions, talk and express themselves freely.

Under quarantine, exercise and physical activity has also come to a bare minimum. Dancing here becomes a fun and effective alternative that motivates everyone to get going. It helps raise body awareness and body positivity. It makes one more mindful of their actions, movements and body parts. Dance therapy combines all the advantages of emotional wellbeing and physical exercise. It provides the individual with a platform to process his/her emotions and express themselves openly. While it does that, it also gets one to exercise and stay healthy.

Thus dance therapy is a successful and powerful method to stay mentally and physically fit and healthy even during this pandemic.
