Amanda Hesser, co-founder of Food52.

Your Twitter bio reads:

Co-founder of @Food52. Author. Former New York Times writer. Parent of twins. I live in Brooklyn, but not the cool part.

…tell me a little more about yourself!

My friend, Merrill, and I run Food52, a cooking and lifestyle brand that aims to inspire the cook in everyone.

We have a site with a vibrant community, cookbooks, and a podcast. We host events and pop-ups, and we sell kitchen and home goods on the the site.

I love cooking and believe it’s the key to better health, happier families and a healthier environment — so it brings me a lot of joy to get to interact with a huge community of people who share this sensibility.

What is your key to success?

I come from a family with a very blue collar mentality — a belief that hard work and grit is vital. And when things have been difficult with my career, this has always gotten me through.

How does reading fit into your daily routine?

I read the New York Times pretty obsessively — I worked there for 11 years, so having it up on my phone or laptop is a bit like a security blanket

I also read links from Twitter and from our internal chat system. I look for a mix of hard news, essay, humor, and visual candy (home renovation slideshows get me every time).

What are your favorite emails, other than the fantastic Food52?

Erin Griffith’s Tribute to the Heroes of Business

Erin Girffith’s Tribute to the Heroes of Business with all its gif glory as seen in Snack.

→ I read it because… she’s so relentlessly funny and fearless about tech and startups.

Jason Hirschhorn’s Media REDEF

Media REDEF email in the Snack.

→ I read it because… I love how personal it is — you feel like he’s talking to you and telling you what’s going on in his head. Sometimes it’s unfiltered and sometimes it’s carefully wrought.

He covers so much ground in the media space, finding stories that I’d never come across, and he has a knack for pulling in posts that lie on the periphery of relevance, yet are fully engaging.

→ I read it because… real estate porn.

What makes you happy?

My family and our home.

What are you working on now that you’re excited about?

A new app that challenges the conventions of typical recipe apps.

Have something to plug — tell us about it!
