Give Us Your Best

It May Just Wind Up On Our Masthead

Recently, the editors of SNAPSHOTS had an interesting and productive discussion around our desire to do something that would recognize the quality of the work we are receiving, but also give our writers and photographers a chance to be more engaged and invested in the publication. The result?

The Monthly Masthead

As you might have noticed, since SNAPSHOTS has been open we have changed the header on our homepage a few times. At first, with getting everything else set up and functioning the image at the top of the page was almost an after thought, and for the first few weeks we used this one of mine:

After getting tired of seeing that everyday, I put up a great black and white shot by Elizabeth Helmich:

I also used this intricate textured shot from Jason Stelzner 🌹🍁 :

This cool graffiti piece by Erika Sauter caught my eye, and she was generous in letting me use it.

Crooked Little Flower was the one to suggest the gorgeous flower shot by Randy Cooper that is our header image currently. At that point we realized I might just be on to something here, tossing up a random picture now and then that catches my eye. Making that into a formal, consistent feature is the reason for editorial teams!

So, I’m pleased to introduce the monthly masthead feature. Where a photo taken by one of our writers will be the image gracing the header on the SNAPSHOTS homepage. Besides the increased exposure that generates for the writer, they will have an opportunity to be featured in a profile interview published in SNAPSHOTS talking about their image and a few things related to photography. However, the part that I like best, is that the person who had their image selected will, with help from the editors, be responsible for choosing the next featured image.

Obviously, it couldn’t be a contest without guidelines, so here they are:

Specific Guidelines:

  • For your photo to be eligible for consideration, you must be a SNAPSHOTS writer with at least three entries published in our publication.
  • To make it easier on both writers and editors, any photo submitted by an eligible writer may be considered for the contest. In other words, you don’t need to do anything special for your pictures to be considered. However, we do recognize that writers may not want a specific picture to be considered for use; if that is the case we ask that you leave a private note to one of the editors with any submission that you do not want eligible for consideration.
  • Images with people, including yourself, as either subject or background will not be considered. Ideal photos include all variety of nature shots, animals, textures, signage, basically anything without people, be they individuals or in a crowd.
  • If we use your image, you give us the right to crop, and/or alter the directional perspective of the image to best fit the homepage logo. For example, in the image we used from Jason Stelzner 🌹🍁, it was cropped and then flipped left to right.

Something to keep in mind. The SNAPSHOTS graphic on the header image sits in the left center quarter of the image and uses a white font on a transparent background. The best images, then, would be ones where the background on the left center quarter is darker. Obviously, we will only be showcasing images that work well with the logo.

You can anticipate the next header a week from Friday. We’re looking forward to seeing what you’ve got!

Not A Writer For Us Yet?

Here is a link to our SNAPSHOT information page. Take a look at it, review our submission guidelines, and if you think you’d like to participate then leave a response in the comment section below asking to be added as a writer. One of the editors will get back to you shortly, letting you know you’ve been added .
