I umpire tennis matches in my free time. It’s just a hobby, albeit a serious one, and people sometimes notice that I am quite infrequent on social media in the summer. The tennis season reaches a crescendo in July and I’ve had the good fortune of being on the line umpiring team at Wimbledon for the past three years. Yes, it is tiring. Yes, it is hectic. By the time the tournament ends, there are jelly backs and aching limbs and sun burnt faces and sleepy eyeballs. But it is also the most relaxing and rejuvenating time of the year.

to step on the grass
and block out the universe
there is you, a ball, and a line
ready, play, serve. FAULT!
