It is a fact that the market halls aren’t just important functional buildings, but also a monument. It is a common feature across the world, but here we will focus on a few such majestic structures across Europe.

While these expansive markets sell everything from fruits and vegetables to flowers and wine, they also narrate a mostly unheard chapter in history. When you venture to any of these markets in the future, besides making the usual purchases, take some time to appreciate the beautiful architecture of these structures and understand the related history.

The photograph used at the beginning is Marché Couvert, a huge complex of covered markets in the city of Metz, in France. It is adjacent to the iconic Metz Cathedral. Essentially a market for fresh food products, but there are a few shops where you can eat freshly prepared food.
