Cathedral. Gallery. Cemetery. Millennium of History.

The Cathedral in Antwerp is a towering landmark in the city, the spire standing just over 400 feet tall.
It is famous for housing four classic paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, three of them large triptychs. There are numerous other masterpieces by Flemish painters, as well as incredible stained glass and funeral monuments (sculptures). The tombs date from the 16th and 17th century.

The immensity is too big to wrap your head around.

For example, it has almost 2 acres of floor space. At one time there were 57 separate altars. Fifty-five stained-glass windows illuminate the space, while 125 of those massive columns hold it up.
The largest bell in the carillon weighs over 14,000 pounds.

This cathedral caused me to have more than a passing interest. Now, wherever I travel, I seek out churches and cathedrals. I admire the architecture and contemplate the strange human condition that compels us to build these colossal monuments.
