We’re on a roll! So far, 59 people have submitted a wide variety of excellent pictures to our first two challenges (the 3 in 1 and the Selfie). The editors want to thank you for such wonderful creativity.

Our Third Challenge: Signs
We are inundated with signs. Official street signs telling us what or what not to do (No Parking!). Handwritten notes taped to front doors (“Back in 5”). Warnings of danger ahead. Directional guides. Posters advertising concerts, plays and art exhibits. From political graffiti in the public square to vulgar scratches on bathroom cubicles. But, once in a while, amidst the cacophony of words and symbols vying for our attention, one sign will particularly catch our eye. That’s what we’re looking for—surprise.

For example, as I wandered around minding my own business, I encountered each of these astonishing signs/graffiti, beginning with my personal favorite:

Why Spelling Is So Important (Toronto)

Unhappy Outside Sagrada Familia (Barcelona)

Who is Poor Julia? (Kemptville)

High-tech Hospital Directions (Toronto)

The Rules

  1. The photo must have been taken by you.
  2. Send a draft post to SNAPSHOTS of signs or graffiti that have surprised, alarmed, or delighted you. You may submit more than one entry, but please only include 3 images at a time.
  3. Please include a title below of no more than 5 words (plus the name of the city where you found it).
  4. All photos are required to meet the content guidelines of SNAPSHOTS, as outlined in our submission guidelines.
  5. Please remember to put the image at the top of your post with the title underneath.
  6. Among your tags, please use: Photography and Sign Challenge.
  7. Submissions may be made to SNAPSHOTS beginning April 16 and will end May 20.

This challenge is open to anyone with an active Medium account. Not yet a writer for us? Here is a link to our SNAPSHOT information page. Take a look at it, review our submission guidelines, and if you think you’d like to participate then leave a response in the comment section below asking to be added as a writer. One of the editors will get back to you shortly, letting you know you’ve been added .
