Most of our lake ducks disappeared in January. We would have considered their absence to be the result of colder-than-normal weather, but they simply moved to a lake across the boulevard. I missed their raucous screeching and whistling that substituted for an alarm clock in the mornings. No wonder I was sleeping later in January!
The mystery of their relocation was solved when we discovered that the man two doors down moved away. He fed them cracked corn every morning, assuring their allegiance to our lake over any other. His soon-to-be ex-wife, who has remained a neighbor, gave us a half bag of cracked corn and the bucket he used. Now my husband and I feed the ducks. At first there would be only this group on our lake, but after two weeks of encouragement and a daily bucket of corn, more are returning, waking me early to start my day,
