Here in Eastern Ontario, when the green leaves have finally unfurled and lawns have greened up, we start to eagerly await the warmer, sunnier months ahead. Summer sees the most colours of any season, but it’s the sudden bursts of yellow which, to me, best represent its lazy dog days. There’s the blazing sun, obviously. But also flowers. Even construction signs (there’s a saying, here in Canada: We have two seasons—winter and construction).

For SNAPSHOT’s Summer Challenge 2023, we invite you to submit any pictures you’ve taken of yellow. Any photos where yellow pops out are fair game; don’t restrict yourself to summer subjects. Contribute up to ten pics, including an author’s citation and perhaps a brief description. Remember the total word count must be no more than 750.

As an example, here’s my contribution to the Yellow Challenge.

Above is a vase of beautiful sunflowers cut from a generous local family’s Sunflower Walk. They encourage you to take some, and offer scissors in case you’ve forgotten yours.

Walking the dog very early one morning I was delighted to see this spectacular sunrise over the glassy river.

Almonte is well known for being a foodie town, and here is abreakfast board from one of our best restaurants. The pale yellow of these hard-boiled eggs is so lovely—especially since I lucked out with a double yolk!

Walking around the corner of our apartment building, I ran into this surprising garden house—a Stanley FATMAX! (Who names these things?)

In the same garden, these bright yellow flowers all blossomed on the same day. I didn’t recognize them, and one of the resident gardeners informed me they’re evening primroses. Lovely.

Then there’s the sky, a constant source of wonder and inspiration. One evening last summer, as the sun was setting and a thunder storm was forming, I shot these dramatic clouds.

And where would the annual celebration of LGBTQ+ Pride be without the bright yellow central stripe of our flag? Here in Almonte almost every store on Mill Street joins in.

Finally, what would summer be without bright yellow construction signs? This one warns of the danger of overhead wires, but my photo missed why. No what? Driving? Diving? I’m at a loss.
