Facing south, little more than 10 feet from
the back deck a solitary sapling, a runt among
giants is incongruity of presence, a starkly
weighted contrast to all that surrounds it.
Planted by those here before us, it remained
that unspoken forgotten something, inherited
along with all the rest.
Almost a year it has been when slowly perhaps
through proximity an odd yet swiftly growing
attachment formed to this bold, earnest runt.
Our home stands on soil that nurses the roots
where 178 yearly completions have marked a
return of seasons past, it was built before the
country declared sovereignty.
Here where the earth is rich, the runt is nourished
by well crafted stability through assurance of time
until it will soar with the giants one day reaching
past the stone structure now dwarfing it’s presence,
and will stand testament to all that has gone before,
a beacon of shelter where tales yet to be told reside.
