The Black Hills of Western South Dakota and Eastern Wyoming feature rugged landscapes, dark pine forests, vibrant wildlife, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Still, no guidebook or travel video can prepare a first-time visitor to the area for their first sight of Devils Tower.

Following a trip to the North Dakota Badlands, my wife and I took a detour to Devils Tower National Monument on our way to Custer State Park in Southwestern South Dakota. While I have seen and walked around the monolith several times, its magnificent presence always impresses me.

The rock columns that jut from the earth were not always called Devils Tower. According to records from United States expeditions to the area…
