The Castles of Dahn
Three clifftop castles in the Palatinate Forest— Castles and Ruins Part 5
I welcomed a little bit of rain on a past Sunday morning. I believe a little too much since the dark clouds practically remained sedentary for most of the day. It didn’t deter me from packing my camera bag and heading to a small city called Dahn in the Palatinate Forest.
Dahn is one of those places where hikers hike, climbers climb, and bikers bike. It is also home to 13 castles, including Dreierburg. Dreier in German is roughly translated as the number three. Burg, and also Schloss, translates to the word castle. The difference is that a Burg works like a fortress since its design serves to defend, while a Schloss works like a palace for residence purposes. As such, Dreierburg served as a fortress with a total of three of them set on top of clifftops named Tanstein, Grafendahn, and Altdahn.
Due to the rain, we took our time driving to Dahn and taking the narrow-almost-one-way-street up the hill towards Dreierburg. Rain jackets and hats protected us as we hiked up the trail and played a little game of peekaboo with the…
