The Stunning Colors of Saskatchewan

On some of Canada’s flattest land

Many joke about how flat the Canadian prairies are. Three of our country's provinces consist of much of this flat land — but Saskatchewan has the most. It is somewhere so flat, that people joke that they can see their dog run away for three days.

Chris, my partner, grew up in a landscape such as this. He hated it. At 21, he moved west to Lake Louise and spent two years in the Rocky Mountains — a very far cry from what he previously knew. Then, the coast pulled him further west and he found himself living in one of Canada's most western cities, Victoria, British Columbia. He swore then that he would never live in the prairies again. According to him, they were flat, boring and uninspiring.

So it’s been an interesting turn of events to find ourselves settling down — for the time being — back in Saskatchewan. But instead of hating it, as we stare out our living room window to the flat landscape beyond, we can’t help but be struck by the stark beauty of it all.
