graffiti art series — part six

Auribus teneo lupum, nam neque quomodo a me amittam invenio neque uti retineam scio.

— Terentius, Phormio 506

I’ve got a wolf by the ears; for I neither know how to get rid of her, nor yet how to keep her. (transl. Riley, 1887)

The angle of her jawline was easier to follow
and attempt to make sense of when she spoke, but who
could focus on something that wasn’t screaming

like the curve of her hips, and the unabashed troubles
living inside her lips, making silent prayers to me
within each sigh of violent expectation, escaping.

Still I pressed on, knowing full well I’d never see outside
our glass house again. It was a good death.

My only regret is not bringing more kindling
for her to burn before she gnawed through the last
shards of my resolve.
