We’re Going on a Smurf Hunt
As a child, I was fascinated by the little blue creatures. I had Smurf socks and Smurf coloring books, and my blue pencil always ran out waaaaayyy too soon.
In August 1979, our local petrol station, BP, started a Smurf collectibles promotion. For only 85 cents (AUD), you could purchase a figurine, and I was desperate to get the collection. So my extended family kept BP in business, collecting Smurfs for meevery time they needed petrol. By the end of the BPs promotion, in 1982, I had nearly every Smurf on offer.
While I’ve got no idea what happened to my little blue Smurfs, my love for the tiny blue creatures never ended.
Seven-year-old Sandi would have adored going on a Smurf hunt. So when the opportunity came up to go on a Smurf hunt at Perth Zoo, middle-aged Sandi took the opportunity and ran with it.
By the end of the day, after walking around the zoo taking happy snaps of these and many other Smurfs, I was ready to take nap … just like Sleepy Smurf.
Of course, before you leave the Zoo, a quick trip to the gift shop is in order. Inside it was a Smurf lovers heaven.
Seven-year-old Sandi gazed fondly at the Smurf figurines, and even reached one hand out, while simultaneously clutching her credit card. Middle-aged Sandi gave herself a stern talking to and left before the Smurfing temptation became too much.
