In concrete jungles or busy suburban landscapes, where the pace of life is fast and our to-do lists are never-ending, it’s easy to leave the natural world behind to finish whichever rat race one is running. This separation grows more in a world that spends most of its free time on smartphones, television and computers rather than being outside.

Getting out to pause with nature then, seems like a distant dream with the ever widening disconnect between us and the poetry of the Earth.

So, first, why? Why should you be in a relationship with nature?

Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.

Contact with nature soothes your mind, body and soul.

It doesn’t really matter if it’s the mountains you hike up, the sea you enjoy swimming in or just a local park you walk in. Appreciating the colors of trees, breathing fresh air and admiring the numerous hues of nature will always do you good.

Imagine, if we lose our connection with nature, what might it mean for our planet?

Creating opportunities to reconnect with nature is crucial for both children and adults if we want to protect our environment and biodiversity. We need to spend more time unplugged and find ways to let nature balance our lives.

Ask yourself,

When did you last feel the wind on your face?

The smell of wet mud and rain drenched air! Bliss is this!

When did you last run barefoot on the grass?

The crackle of the dry grass under my feet, seemed too noisy for this calm. I stood very still.

When did you last sit and watch the sunset?

“Every sunset is an opportunity to reset.”

When did you last take in a sunrise?

This stunt was performed under the supervision of an ever so vigilant husband. Do not try this on your own.

When did you last look at a view with no buildings?

“If you want to heal, find water and stare.”

I answered a few of these questions recently and it felt darn good.

“Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.”

I even had a conversation with a Texas Longhorn.

How you doin’?

He seemed interested in having a relationship. ❤
