My first week with Snapchat Spectacles

Impressive is a word I don’t give out to new pieces of technology often, that is, unless it completely surpasses all my expectations. There comes a time when a product leaves me speechless, and in this case it’s Snapchat Spectacles — and they are beyond impressive. This wearable technology created by Snap, Inc. is a product that I can say without a doubt are the coolest sunglasses to wear and create content with. I’ve had them for a week now and I’ve experimented in a few different ways outlined below.

I put them on a drone

As a professional licensed FAA drone pilot, the first thing I did with my Spectacles was by mounting them onto my DJI Phantom 4 drone. Albeit tricky to mount onto, they worked fairly well — there were some technical issues that did arise, but it worked nonetheless. Check out the video below to see a clip of it — keep in mind however that viewing the Spectacle videos don’t look as good as they do when viewed natively in Snapchat (you can’t turn your phone in multiple directions outside of Snapchat).

I put them on my dog

My dog Lily is champ for letting me put them onto her, however I didn’t put them on her face. I put her harness on I use for taking walks with, and threaded the left and right ear rests of the Spectacles through the harness, and taped the two ends together so they wouldn’t fall off. Basically they were resting upon the middle of her back giving an over-the-shoulder viewpoint of her walking around. Here’s a portion of the video below.

I wore them while playing music

Lastly, I put them on me. These are of course meant for humans! I dabble in music production from time to time and I thought it would be fun to show my music-making process. I showed the steps I did to create a song from scratch with great results from my viewers. Here’s a snipet of the video again below.

Overall, Spectacles are so much fun. Their intuitiveness and ease of use make them a remarkable product. Anyone can use them they are that simple. I cannot wait for future software updates that Snapchat adds to them — who knows, maybe they’ll add additional AR functionality to them somehow. There’s hidden tech they might not have revealed yet — we’ll just have to wait and see. And I just can’t wait.

Thanks for reading, please recommend this — it would mean a lot.
