Gemini joined the group of AI apps available for Android

Since this week, Google’s AI Gemini is available as an Android app in Europe.

I took the occasion to play around with it and compare the results with the ChatGPT app.

I wanted to test Gemini’s image recognition capabilities, so I uploaded a screenshot of the Tesla app homepage and asked both models two related questions.

The Tesla app screenshot I used to test the models

The results:

Prompt 1: “Name me 3 competitors of this app”

Both models recognised the screen from Tesla and provided a short description of what the app does.

Gemini suggested three apps that can be used by Tesla drivers to augment the features of the main car app:

  • “ABRP”
  • “Stats”
  • “Tezlab”

These results didn’t seem direct Tesla competitors to me, so I tried to delve deeper into the reasoning behind the suggestions, but unfortunately, the sources linked to the results could not be opened 🫤

Gemini’s broken source links. Not a great UX.

On the other hand, Chat-GPT better understood my intent of searching for other connected car apps and provided me with suggestions from OEM competitors:

  • “My BMW App”
  • “FordPass App”
  • “Volkswagen We Connect App”

Prompt 2: “Suggest me 3 improvements to enhance the UI of this app screen”

Both models correctly analyzed the UI of the uploaded screen, but again, GPT was able to provide more contextual suggestions.

Gemini suggested general improvements like:

  • “Prioritize Frequently Used Actions”
  • “Improve Information Hierarchy”
  • “Leverage Whitespace”

GPT gave me specific examples of improvements citing elements on the given screen:

  • “Increase the font size and contrast for better readability. For instance, the “Charging Network” text could be larger and more prominent.”
  • “Use more descriptive labels on buttons. Instead of just “Explore,” consider something like “Explore Charging Options” for better context.”
  • Add intuitive icons alongside text to help users quickly identify functions. For example, an icon of a car next to “Order A Vehicle”.

Conclusion

That was my quick test. For now, my impression is that GPT is still ahead in terms of accuracy and relevance, but given the rapid pace of AI development, I’m sure the winner is not yet set!
