On Saturday, we took Cody to the beach and took him off of his leash. Running at full speed across the beach, he was a little white blur. He went around in circles, splashing in the water, wagging his tail the whole time. He was free — full of joy. He looked so happy it damn near broke my heart.

Staring at the great expanse of the ocean with the wet sand between my toes, I breathed in the sand and salt. There was beauty in the crashing waves, sunshine streaming through bright blue skies. I wanted to soak in the sun and beam light through my brain and body because if Cody could do it, so could I. That’s what I tried to tell myself, anyways.
