I am twenty-two-years-old with the world at my fingertips. I am reaching out to the universe, hands open, palms facing the skies. I am not sure if my hands will turn into fists like my father’s or if they will be burned and scorched and chafed like my mother’s, but I know that I will keep trying. I will keep my hands open, waiting, grasping, holding, searching.

My life is a series of fragments, the pieces of a complicated puzzle that even I cannot put together. I am broken, shattered to bits with shards that poke and prod painfully. But I will not stay this way forever. I will embrace these broken pieces for the cracks and splinters in my soul will be filled with light — emblazoned gold with an unfathomable hope.
