5 things to read and see

Everyone has work that didn’t get published, completed, edited etc. Recently Rejected is a site that takes that unfinished work and puts it online with almost no context for people to browse through. It’s fascinating to scroll through and wonder what factors lead to these projects being rejected.

2. Design Lessons From Theater Legend Robert Wilson

Thinking about design in a 3-D medium is something that Robert Wilson has done all the time in theater. Now, he’s designing museum exhibits, and in this article he explains the processes he goes through and his thoughts on designing for spaces.

3. Mikaela Shiffrin is winning a lot of slalom races. And that’s not good enough.

This is not only a fascinating look at what it’s like to be an Olympic-level skier, but the way it’s been put together and designed is great. It’s crisp, lets the vivid video stand out and creates a story for the reader to move through.

4. How to Create a 3D Paper Cut-Out Text Effect in Adobe InDesign

I’ve seen paper cut-out effects in multiple newspaper designs and I always just assumed the paper had a really great artist on staff to do it. Now I know I can make one myself without having to get up from the computer.

5. Behind the Design: Team USA at the Winter Olympics 2018

This year USA Olympics teamed up with Ralph Lauren to craft the clothing behind the 2018 Olympic team. The look is called “Peak Americana” and features a large red, white and blue jacket with a special internal heating system.

5 things to see

  1. Who’s next? | The Daily Orange, Syracuse University

I love this. Using old archive photos can be difficult if they’re low resolution, so using the silhouettes to fill the page and making the players seem larger-than-life works really well. The edition overall is super clean, the colors are beautiful and I love the arrows that keep everything cohesive.

2. Love + sex | Ka Leo, University of Hawaii at Manoa

What I like about this cover is its simplicity. It’s mostly just repetition of letters, words and icons, but choosing to use a 3-D effect on the people and headline elevates the cover from plain to popping off the page.

3. How acid mine drainage has affected southeast Ohio’s waterways | The Post, Ohio University

This web project is really beautiful. The striking header image, the map where you can view each location, the variety of photos and the map is well done and thorough. All of these elements help break up the text and keep it from being unwieldy.

4. Living beauty | Central Michigan Life, Central Michigan University

The use of the prosthetic leg as the “L” in “Living Beauty” is a great way to tie in the content with the headline. I love the delicate shadow in the picture. The elegant text pairs well with the topic and the spread is really clean and easy to follow.

5. And the Oscar goes to … | The Diamondback, University of Maryland, College Park

I love the way they chose to design the article for “Get Out.” Most designs I’ve seen focus on the entire face, but I like that this design narrows the focus even more to just the eyes. It’s still clearly “Get Out,” but in a new way.
