5 things to read

1. How Puerto Rican artists are channeling grief and loss to restore joy around San Juan

This very visual and beautifully illustrated story is something I’ve never seen before. I wish I could get a behind-the-scenes look of how it was created, because it wonderfully reflects the artistry of the island.

2. Oscar films become illustrated statues

With the Oscars a couple of weeks ago, see a fun gallery with the Oscar statues dressed up like the films that are nominated for Best Picture.

3. How Creativity is Measured-And Why It’s So Difficult

One PhD student in this article describes creativity as, “the ability to be different in a useful way.” This article dives into what creativity is and the variety of different tests, questions and processes behind its measurement.

4. Made Thought design world’s first Plastic Free Aisle for Dutch supermarket

In Amsterdam, there are now more than 700 plastic-free options to choose from in a local grocery store. This now gives shoppers the opportunity to have a greater choice in choosing more sustainable packaging, which is a great step forward for sustainability.

5. Making room for silence, solitude and tranquility

Get a bit of a crash course in what it takes to create a tranquil image, whether that’s in a photograph or in an illustration. And see a bunch of examples from artists like Thomas Colligan and Sander Van Der Werf.

5 things to see

  1. Beauty beneath | The Daily Orange, Syracuse University

I love just how much the images pop against this black background. Usually black backgrounds can be really overwhelming, but it really brings out the dimension in the skull and the beautiful colors in the petri dishes.

2. Oakway Center | The Daily Emerald, University of Oregon

This whole edition does a great job using illustrations of the general area combined with delicious looking photos of the food at the different restaurants to highlight the local businesses.

3. True/False film fest | The Maneater, University of Missouri

This is a really beautiful photo. The blurry lights in front with the crystal clear T/F highlights the headline and subject matter without being distracting.

4. Oscars Wild | The Diamondback, University of Maryland, College Park

The film strips as borders for all the different movies is a fun touch, and the zig zagging lines brings the readers’ eyes straight to the headline. I also really like the format of the text, with the subject on the left side of the column and the text on the right.

5. Rhythms of Black history | The Et Cetera, Eastfield College

This musical background is a great way to tie the historic black and white photos with a musical pop of color. I just wish there were clearer headlines to go with each of the different sections.
