5 things to read and see
This week, read about the joys of wandering, learn how subatomic particles can create art and see an awesome ode to the 80s with a Pac-Man themed page.
5 things to read
1. On the wonders of wandering in London
Sometimes it’s important to take some time off, relax and just observe the world around you. This article articulates why.
2. This artist uses subatomic particles to paint the cosmos
I love seeing amazing art created in completely innovative and fresh ways. Be inspired by Kysa Johnson’s incredible work using subatomic particles (!!!).
3. Why you should make time for creative side projects
Whether they lead to a full-time job or are just a great way to get your mind off of work, side projects are a lot of fun and can be used to explore something new.
4. The most crucial design job of the future
Data is a very important part in understanding and developing empathy for other people — and design plays a crucial role.
5. Brexit, freelance culture and a talent shortfall
A really fascinating article about how the economy post-Brexit has led to an influx of freelance designers. Now there’s a shortage of people to take on senior designer positions.
Page Designs
- Nostalgia overload | Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University
I’m obsessed with this — what a fun way to relate the design to the content of the article. It’s something anyone would immediately recognize, and the typography to accompany it is perfect.
2. Dictionary Deity | The Daily Californian, University of California Berkeley
This illustration really captures the deity aspect (eyes closed, hand up, in a meditating position) and the dictionary background really just brings it to life. The chicken and the egg? What else would a deity be thinking about besides the age-old existential question?
3. Manoa Now | Ka Leo, University of Hawaii at Manoa
The water/sand/beach effect on the word “Manoa” is so well done, the colors are vibrant and the splash marks from the waves create a great package. Having the word “now” sit just behind the trees is a great touch to tie it into the photo.
4. The Vidette 2017 survival guide | The Daily Vidette, Illinois State University
This illustration is a little bit wonky, which just adds to the personality and fun of the campus. It highlights what must be the most iconic parts of campus, while having a bird with open arms ready to welcome the freshmen to school.
5. Trump column | Daily Kansan, University of Kansas
Sure, there are probably quite a few other similar illustrations out there, but you can’t deny that it’s smart to use one to represent this column, especially on social. It packs a bit more punch than your average Trump photo.
