5 things to read

1. 3 Steps to Building a High-Performing In-House Design Team

If you’re in charge of a design team, this article has some good tips on how to create the best one possible. Some of the advice includes the importance of communication and clearly defining roles and responsibilities.

2. 20 Beautifully Illustrated Alternative Movie Posters

Here are twenty great examples of awesome illustration inspiration for some classic movies. These are beautifully detailed and all have a unique spin.

3. The GIF & the art of storytelling

This article goes in-depth on the importance of the GIF and how it can be more expressive than a still image. It also talks about different storytelling techniques and compares GIFs to longer Instagram videos.

4. 23 Creative Design Ideas from the Education Industry

Having a different perspective on design can help you come up with new ideas and think more creatively. These ideas cover everything from huge posters to admissions viewbooks to web projects.

5 things to see

  1. Dinner for none | The Quinnipiac Chronicle, Quinnipiac University

There are a lot of great elements that have come together on this page. The simple photo illustration with the headline coming out from behind the page, the illustrated drop cap and the clean statistics in the corner all make a really sharp page.

2. Basketball preview | The Daily Pennsylvanian, University of Pennsylvania

I think the limited color palette and diagonal lines creates a really dynamic page. There’s tons of movement without being too cluttered.

3. Weekend’s turkey ‘carving’ kit | Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University

I love the idea of doing a “turkey carving kit.” It’s so fun and is a great break for students from the stress of projects and looming finals.

4. Down the middle | The Post, Ohio University

This spread is really sharp and clean. I like the simple effect on the word “middle” — it’s very effective. I just wish that instead of seven pie charts, there was a single line graph, which could convey the change in the Hispanic student population over the years more clearly.

5. The New Frontier | Washington Square News, New York University

Using space as a way to visualize the future of social media is really interesting and provides a beautiful background to the spread. I also like the varied forms of the articles, although I wish each one started with a drop cap to draw the eye.
