5 things to read and see

This week, read about tips for being an illustrator, get inspired by Harry Potter designs, and see great illustrations about social anxiety and perfume.

1. How to be an award-winning illustrator

I absolutely love the advice Yuko Shimizu gives in this article. From taking small risks in everything you do (she recommends around 10% risk for all you number people out there), to defining success by whether or not the client finds it successful, to illustrating things that a photo can’t do, the advice is sound and incredibly applicable in daily life.

2. Harry Potter Design: Celebrating 20 Years of Wizarding | HOW Design

Of course, I’m a little biased here because I LOVE Harry Potter, but these are just great designs for an incredible book series. Great way to get inspired.

3. The bizarre beauty of Silicon Valley’s salt ponds

I never would have thought about the beauty of salt ponds, but these incredible aerial photos show that beautiful landscapes can be found in all kinds of nature.

4. Stop using the excuse “organizational change is hard”

This isn’t strictly design-related, but as someone who has been a part of a merging of broadcast and print news at school, I know just how wild change can be. But I’m surprised at just how often people think organizational change will fail, and I’m also surprised at how often it’s worked. Change may be hard, but it is often a good idea.

5. How the chess set got its look and feel

Ever wonder how chess came to be designed the way it was? This article explains that there was apparently no real similarities between chess until the 1849, when the classic “Staunton” set was introduced. And the rest is history.

Page Designs

  1. Campus Navigator | The Daily Illini, University of Illinois

This is a great photo to lead the section. The statue with her arms outstretched beckons to the reader, and using a translucent background on the type keeps it from totally overtaking the great photo.

2. Eugene’s backyard | The Daily Emerald, University of Oregon

While the design of this is simple, I really love the photograph they chose for it. It’s such a unique angle and cropping, where you would only really understand the significance of the building if you were from Oregon. It also gives the page lots of diagonal lines to create movement.

3. They live! | Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University

This is such a cool collage, and the black and white effect of the photos makes them pop. It’s bold, yet simple and really jumps off of the page.

4. Aftel Archive of Curious Scents offers intoxicating trip through history of fragrance | The Daily Californian, University of California Berkeley

I think this illustration is really stunning. The soft pastel colors, floating bottles and curvy lines really bring to life the idea of a trip through fragrance.

5. Werner: It’s not just shyness, it’s social anxiety | The University Daily Kansan, University of Kansas

I love the wide variety of emotions and expressions, and how it simply plays off of the emoji with the yellow circle for the face. It keeps it universal, but fun.
