5 things to read

1. Want To Be A Great Designer? Ban Post-It Notes

Ray Sison, the design director at Work & Co., argues against the use of sticky notes and constant idea generation in the design process. He instead advocates starting with sketching to get the ideas flowing, and to actually start to make something.

2. Opinion | The best and worst of Trump, according to our readers

This is a really interesting way to present the opinions of other Washington Post readers on Trump’s presidency so far. The design and rotation of the image at the top of the page is also really clever.

3. Get your work featured in an industry-leading magazine

If you’ve ever wanted to submit your artwork or designs to be featured in a magazine, this articles has some helpful tips.

4. The top 10 big-brand logos

Why are certain brands and logos so much more popular and recognizable than others? This article breaks down some of the biggest logos out there and what makes them great.

5. 7 Coloring Books for Designers

Coloring books are always great for relieving stress and giving yourself something to do while watching TV. Here are seven great options to choose from.

5 things to see

  1. Bob Dylan | Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University

I love the simplicity in both the illustration and the design. It’s recognizable, the hair is beautifully colored and I love how the “Bob” uses one of the shades of gray from the hair. It ties everything together.

2. National Coming Out Day | Ka Leo, University of Hawai’i at Manoa

They typography here is really fun. The rainbow of colors and shades is immediately obvious, and tying in the loopy half circles and lines into the rest of the design makes it cohesive.

3. The Money Issue | The Miami Hurricane, University of Miami

This illustration is simple but sharp, the 3D effect adds an extra layer of dimension (literally) that helps it pop. Making George Washington out of the negative space in the “O” is another awesome touch.

4. The Religion Issue | Washington Square News, New York University

This is beautifully crafted. The colors, shades and gradient are perfect and the typography fits into the theme while remaining easy to read. The stained glass illustration is super creative.

5. Watermelon bust | Ball State Daily News, Ball State University

Using the color palette from the photos in the headline ties the page together and adding in the watermelon slice as the “A” is very cute. Clean, easy to read and great photography.
