This week peruse some infographics about your favorite movies, read about how Refinery29 uses social media and see a great blueprint-themed illustration about the future of Oregon.

5 things to read

1. 10 top movie infographics

Are you still confused about the different dream levels in “Inception”? Or want to know the actual chronological timeline of “Pulp Fiction”? Or maybe you just want to see the definitive list of the best 250 movies of all time. Well, there’s an infographic for those. Check them out.

2. Have we entered the era of bad graphic design?

This article seems to be less on an era of bad graphic design and more about where album artwork is now and how it relates to the music industry’s audience. But it’s an interesting read that focuses on three “poorly designed” album covers from 2017, and why there were designed the way they were.

3. 10 Top designers on the iPhone’s real legacy

It’s been 10 years since the initial launch of the iPhone, and this article talks to 10 top designers about their feelings on the first iPhone, how successful it has been and whether or not it will continue to stick around.

4. A Comic Sans for the 21st century is here

It’s handwriting inspired, comes in serif, sans serif, blackletter, decorative and even more forms, each with six different weights to capture the look of writing the fine-point pens or fat-tipped sharpies.

5. Refinery29 on the importance of great illustration

A really fascinating look at how Refinery29 cultivates a really unique and engaging social media presence by creating their own stock image gallery and having strong illustrations.

Page Designs

  1. The “Star of Gladness” returns | Ka Leo, University of Hawaii at Manoa

This does a great job at having text over a photo, but still not having it take away from the beautiful image. Using transparency with the text and square behind it helps keep the photo as the centerpiece.

2. Hollywood movies make no sense | Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University

The infographics on this page are really well done that ties in both production value, total money grossed, and critical acclaim. I just wish they weren’t all the same color, because the circles start to blend in with each other.

3. Welcome to the home of champions | The Daily Tar Heel, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill

This photo collage is really effective, and a great way to tie into the headline that accompanies it. It really shows off the different facets of the school.

4. Twitter logo | The Daily Californian, University of California Berkeley

This is a really sharp way for the Daily Californian to show support for Pride month. It’s clean and obvious what it represents.

5. Creating “the Oregon model” | The Daily Emerald, University of Oregon

Using a blueprint theme to convey the theme of a utopian ideal works really well here. It makes sense that they’re trying to build a better community, and the blueprint sketch is very well done and not jumbled.
