This week, read about the future of design, get some tips on designing for wearable devices and see an amazing illustration of Alice Cooper.

1. Design in the era of the algorithm

This article talks about what the “next mobile” is and what designers will be designing for next. It covers how some companies are opting to design for every device or platform available and how machine learning works.

2. Designing for wearables: 11 things to keep in mind

As wearable devices become more and more popular, it’s important to think about how to design for them. Adobe gives 11 smart tips for things to think about when designing for such small screens.

3. 21 Striking promotional posters for creative inspiration

Sometimes you really just need to find some great design inspiration—these posters provide just that!

4. The typography & design of vehicle dashboards

This is a long and in-depth article about the design of vehicle dashboards, how the design has changed over time and how it affects our health and safety while on the road.

5. Twitter redesigned itself to make the tweet supreme again

A super great explanation about why Twitter opted for a redesign, and how it’s supposed to help improve the user experience. An awful lot has changed in the Twitter app, and it’s supposed to be a good thing.

Page Designs

  1. Queer expression | The Daily Californian, University of California Berkeley

This is a really beautiful illustration that does an excellent job tying into the subject matter, and also creating a great frame for the article. The way they did the pull quote was also a really smart way to bring attention to it without being too distracting.

2. School’s out | The Daily Emerald, University of Oregon

This is another amazing illustration. It definitely gets at the craziness and insanity of Alice Cooper, and having the words “school’s out” line up with the top of his hat is a great touch.

3. Food for all | Indiana Daily Student, Indiana University

This is a cute page that looks almost like an app would with the bright, gradient background, simple food icons and little dots running down the middle. It’s fun to read, and super easy to follow.

4. June events calendar | Ka Leo, University of Hawaii at Manoa

I think this page does a great job of making the events page a lot of fun, but doesn’t take it too far. The brightly colored dates really stand out against the pictures, I just wish that the one picture in the top right didn’t have text behind the date.

5. ‘A responsibility to truth and logic’ | The Daily Pennsylvanian, University of Pennsylvania

I think the illustration here is really simple, but spot on. I really love the tiny little black mouth dot on Trump that makes him look as though he’s trying to yell at the giant planet Earth. It also uses white space nicely, so the page doesn’t feel cramped.

Students, did you know you can join the Society for News Design for as little as $5 a month?
