Occasionally, I do enjoy watching an action movie. But there are definitely some requirements in order for me to have a good time. Sadly, Sleepless [IMDb, Trailer] did not even meet one of them.

Movie Poster “Sleepless”

As the movie starts, a cop in Las Vegas (Jamie Foxx) and his partner immediately are involved in a shooting as they try to interfere with a drug delivery. Something went wrong, however, and suddenly they are involved with the ruthless son of some kind of criminal overlord and his “business partner”, who owns a large casino on the strip. And from here you can probably just guess the rest of the story and you would most likely be wrong, because it is even less creative.

Son is kidnapped, Jamie Foxx “handles” the situation, Jamie Foxx fights some guy in the casino’s kitchen (slinging around clouds of flour, dragging opponents the entire length of a table and so on), Jamie Foxx fights some guy at the pool (yes, in the water as well), Jamie Foxx fights some guy in the middle of a loud night club (yes, somebody is thrown into a glass table), Jamie Foxx fights some guy in the parking lot with lots and lots of gunfire. At some point his wife (or ex-wife? doesn’t matter) gets involved as well and shows up right in the middle of the mess. Oh…and there is also an internal affairs officer (Michelle Monaghan) and her partner (David Harbour), who get on his trail and suspect him of corruption. And of course there is the totally unforeseeable story twist. Woohoo.

Whoever thinks that this makes for a good movie is wrong. There are hundreds of movies like this and just repeating something less than mediocre is just sad. So, here is quick recommendation for something to watch instead: Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) in 24. This also involves a stupidly durable and overly powerful main character, but there are cool new concepts and they succeeded to create something unique (for the first two seasons at least).

I really hope that the next one can be finally be more positive and contain an actual recommendation.
