Booeymonger & Michael’s

Booeymonger is “A Unique Delicatessen”.

Michael’s is an arts and crafts store.

Both are typical American experiences that are copied but not quite replicated in the rest of the world.

Booeymonger has been around Washington D.C. since the 1970’s starting in Georgetown and evolving through several other locations that have come and gone over the years. Before today I’d heard of Booeymonger but never actually been to one. What finally got me there was the helpful clerk at Michael’s telling us it was the closest place to get a good lunch.

The Bethesda Michael’s was magical and disappointing at the same time. Magical because the craft stores in Tokyo and Germany (where I’ve been living the last several years) just don’t compare. Disappointing because finding parking in Bethesda at noon on Saturday is an adventure in and of itself.

This urban Michael’s store is located in the lower level of a building that also provides a parking garage for customers. There were ample spaces to choose from, probably because the high rates ($7 for two hours) can’t be validated anywhere. These days I’m accompanied by my mother and every step counts so I paid the premium price.

After taking the elevator down into the depths of the below ground Michael’s I was disappointed that this location was poorly stocked and didn’t have the gold micron pens Mom wanted. I did leave the store with several necessities including fifty cent flip-flops and Modge Podge.

Thanks to the complimentary store Wi-Fi I was able to download a handy coupon standing in the check out line. Hint to those who don’t already know- never pay full price at A.C. Moore or Michael’s; there is always an online coupon.

Booeymonger was located at street level, just up the escalator, so we rode up for lunch.

My experience at Booeymonger was fine. I wouldn’t go out of my way to return and I’m not inspired to visit the other locations but if I’m in the area why not stop back in? The citrus inspired decor was bright and walls of mirrors really make the place feel spacious.

You order at the counter and wait for your order which takes a little longer than fast food but it’s all fresh made to order so well worth the time. Pick a seat, get your fountain drink (Coke products) and enjoy your lunch.

Booeymonger doesn’t have a rewards program but they are part of something called FiveStars. I can’t tell you much about FiveStars rewards program because I didn’t sign up for it yet. I enjoyed my sandwich, paid for the premium parking and headed out. FiveStars will be something new for another day.
