Chicken & Waffles in DC on Lipstick Day

Saturday started with a plan and took on a life of its own after M.A.C cosmetics lured us out with the promise of free lipstick but the line going around the block was too much to handle. The line of patient freebee shoppers went around the block. I asked my smartphone to redirect us to the nearest brunch.

Southern Style Chicken and Waffels

Chicken and waffles become a trendy, classic southern dish in the new millennium but Mom claims she’d never heard of such a thing before 2000. I remember it from the 1988 movie Tapeheads with John Cusack and Wikipedia tells a much longer history.

Jake’s American Grille seemed cheerful and unlike the other restaurant's on that block of Connecticut Avenue it was open. Service was friendly and it looks like Jakes has a lot of nightlife going on for party animals out after 6pm.

Since Jake’s offered the iconic dish and Mom had never eaten chicken and waffles I placed an order to share while we decided on main courses. After all, Something New EveryDay (SNED) is out theme right?

The tasty treat came out quickly and Mom ate her first southern style chicken and waffles in Washington DC. which is below the Mason-Dixon Line so its technically in the South.

In the diverse spirit of America I had Maryland crab soup with hot tea and Mom enjoyed a main course of Huevos Rancheros before walking across the street to Politics and Prose Bookstore.

Politics & Prose is catnip for literary junkies. So many celebrities have visited such an understated space.

Politics and Prose is one those places that I’ve known about forever but never taken the time to visit. They sell books, support both readers and writers, and bring people together through all sorts of literary events.

Perhaps, one day in the future when I’m a published novelist, I’ll return to see my book on the shelf and go to Jakes for a celebratory drink.

Author reading area and self publishing services nook at Politics & Prose across the street from Jakes where happy hours starts a 4pm.

I learned later that it was also National Chicken Wing day that went as well as the free lipstick.
